Cheers to 50 Years!
This last weekend we celebrated 50 years of Qualicum Dental. It was September of 1974 when my family moved to Qualicum Beach. My dad started the dental practice, fresh out of dental school, and I started kindergarten. Fast forward 50 years later, and he is still practicing a couple of days a week, and it's my 25th year practicing with him. We had a gathering of people who have worked with us in the past and those working with us now. It was great to reconnect and enjoy a pleasant afternoon together.
The highlight for me, however, was when my father, Dr. Verne McShane, spoke to everyone. With his characteristic charm, he shared impromptu remarks, thanking everyone and regaling the audience with entertaining backstories from the early days of the practice.
Dr. Verne reminisced about his early days in Qualicum Beach, sharing how he wasn't initially planning to stay long-term. He spoke fondly of his long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Don Graham, and how their partnership shaped the practice. In his humorous style, he compared Don's wife Jo to "bull kelp," gripping onto Vancouver Island and keeping them rooted in the community.
One of the most touching moments was when Dr. Verne acknowledged the dedicated staff who have been with the practice for decades. He joked about our "newbie" Hardeep, who's been with us for "only" 15 years, highlighting the longevity and loyalty of our team. This sense of family and community has been the cornerstone of our practice from the beginning.

As we move forward, we're not changing who we are at our core. We're still all about giving our patients the best care, being part of this amazing community, and always trying to be better. As Dr. Verne put it, "In the long term, it's not about the money. It's the communication and the friendships we build, and if you build friendships, it's not really work." This philosophy will continue to guide us in the years to come.
As we reflect on our 50-year journey, I'm filled with immense gratitude for everyone who has been part of our story. To our patients, our dedicated staff, and all our partners in the community - your trust, support, and friendship have been the pillars of our success.
